Severe Heatwave Warning Hits Southeast England
The Met Office has slapped a level three heatwave warning on Southeast England from Friday, June 17th to Sunday, June 19th. Friday is set to be the hottest day, with soaring temperatures posing serious health risks.
Health Chiefs Urge Urgent Action
A level three warning means high temps are already here, and the heat could trigger a spike in health issues. Experts warn immediate action is needed to protect vulnerable groups, especially the elderly, young children, and those with health conditions.
“It’s common sense, but absolutely critical,” said Dr Anjan Ghosh, KCC Director for Public Health. “Think carefully about protecting yourself, your family, and especially vulnerable people from the heat.”
Top Tips to Beat the Heat and Stay Safe
- Check in on elderly neighbours, young kids, and anyone with health issues.
- Stay hydrated with water—avoid tea, coffee, and alcohol.
- Never leave babies, children, or animals in parked cars.
- Avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm; if you must go out, stick to the shade, wear a hat, and use sunscreen.
- Keep curtains closed in sunny rooms to cool your home.
- Wear light, loose-fitting cotton clothes.
- Be cautious if cooling off in water—always follow local safety advice.
- Carry water and check weather and travel updates if you’re out and about.
- Plan ahead: stock up on food, water, and any medications.
Know When to Seek Help
Dr Navin Kumta, Clinical Chair of NHS Kent and Medway CCG, advises against rushing to A&E or calling 999 unless it’s a real emergency. Instead, dial 111 or visit 123.
