UK Braced for More Wet and Windy Bank Holiday Weekend
Saturday’s Showers Roll In
The soggy spell isn’t letting up this weekend. Saturday will be dull and wet for much of the UK. Central, eastern, and northern England, along with Northern Ireland, will see showers develop—but thankfully, they won’t be as heavy as Friday’s downpours.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert warned, “Rain will hit southwest England early Saturday, pushing northeast by midday. London should brace for wet spells from mid-morning. Scotland, northern England, and Northern Ireland will experience a mix of sunshine and showers before heavier rain moves in overnight. Temperatures will stay low – around 16°C in London and up to 20°C where sunnier weather clings on in northwest Scotland.”
Sunday Offers Some Sunshine… But Not for All
Bank holiday Sunday will start dry and bright in western parts but cloudier with rain drizzling across the east. Western and central areas can expect warm, sunny spells spreading gradually nationwide.
However, eastern and southeast England face a threat of lingering, slow-moving heavy showers, with some turning thundery. Meanwhile, northeast England and eastern Scotland could stay damp, cool, and grey throughout the day.
Stormy Start to the Week
Monday kicks off mostly dry but dull in the east. Heavy rain sweeping in from the west will spread across much of the UK, sparing mainly the far north of Scotland, which should enjoy warmer, drier conditions. The west will see drier weather later, though cloud and light drizzle may persist, especially over hills. Winds will pick up, with temperatures around average.
Looking ahead, Tuesday and Wednesday pose a risk of more heavy showers and thunderstorms, keeping the unsettled theme going well into next week.
Coronation Weather: A Mixed Bag
History shows coronations rarely get perfect weather. The Met Office archive reveals highs of just 11.8°C during Queen Elizabeth II’s 1953 coronation, accompanied by light rain. King George V’s 1911 coronation was warmer, warming up to 17°C – the mildest score among recent ceremonies.
