Massive Rail Strike Set to Bring UK Travel to a Halt

Chaos looms for commuters as Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) members at Network Rail and 13 train operators plan strikes on June 21, 23, and 25. Adding to the turmoil, London Underground workers will stage a separate 24-hour walkout in a dispute over jobs and pensions, clashing with the first rail strike on June 21.

Biggest Rail Strike Since 1989

The RMT warns this will be the largest rail strike in over 30 years, involving more than 50,000 workers. Last month, union members voted overwhelmingly for action amid rising pay rows and job cuts. The union says workers who kept trains running during the pandemic are now facing pay freezes and hundreds of sackings.

“Railway workers have been treated appallingly,” said RMT general secretary Mick Lynch. “Despite our best efforts in negotiations, the rail industry, with government backing, has ignored their concerns.”

“We are in a cost-of-living crisis. It’s unforgivable for railway workers to lose jobs or endure pay freezes when inflation hits 11.1% and rising.”

“Our union will launch a sustained campaign of industrial action that will bring the railway system to a standstill.”

Fat Cats Making Millions While Workers Suffer

The union highlights the glaring inequality: rail companies pocket profits of at least £500 million each year, while high-paid rail bosses raked in millions during the Covid pandemic. This “unfairness” fuels workers’ anger and determination to secure a fair deal.

The RMT remains open to talks but warns ministers and bosses must offer new proposals to stop months of disruption gripping the nation’s railways.
