Train Strikes to Hit England – Chaos Looms During Tory Conference

Train travel in England is set to grind to a halt again as Aslef train drivers announce fresh strikes. Walkouts are planned for September 30 and October 4, with an overtime ban kicking in from September 29 and lasting through October 6. The action will hit 16 train companies, causing major disruption for passengers.

Ongoing Pay Dispute Sparks New Walkouts

The latest strikes extend a bitter 18-month battle over pay and working conditions. Aslef members rejected earlier offers made by train operators, leaving talks deadlocked. This stalemate spells more cancelled services and commuter chaos across the country.

Strikes Timed to Rattle Tory Party Conference

The disruptions coincide with the Conservative Party conference in Manchester from October 1 to 4. Transport Secretary Mark Harper slammed the action as “cynical” and “politically motivated,” warning of widespread passenger misery and damage to England’s transport network.

“These strikes are a cynical, politically motivated tactic that will only hurt hardworking commuters,” said Harper.

Calls are intensifying for fresh talks to end the stand-off and restore normal service.

£500 Million Boost for Port Talbot Steelworks – But Jobs at Risk

The UK government has pledged up to £500 million to help Port Talbot steelworks go green amid a £1.25 billion plan to slash emissions. Tata Steel will pitch in £700 million towards new electric arc furnaces expected to be up and running within three years.

Port Talbot, home to Britain’s largest steel plant in South Wales, operates two blast furnaces 24/7, making products from tin cans to submarines. However, the switch to greener methods means “deep restructuring” and could cost up to 3,000 jobs nationwide.

“This transition will require tough changes, but it’s vital for reducing carbon emissions,” said a Tata Steel spokesperson.

The government insists the move could protect more than 5,000 jobs across the UK, though local communities remain anxious over the uncertain future.
