Funfair Horror at Lambeth Country Show: Woman Critically Injured
A woman in her 40s remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries after a freak accident on a funfair ride at the Lambeth Country Show in Brockwell Park. The ride malfunctioned on June 7, the first day of the popular event, also leaving a man in his 40s with potentially life-changing injuries.
Four Hurt in Ride Failure – Two Released
The incident sent shockwaves through the family-friendly event, as emergency services raced to the scene around 6.20pm. Besides the woman and the man in their 40s, an 11-year-old girl and a man in his 50s were also hospitalised. Thankfully, the man in his 50s and the young girl have since been discharged, Scotland Yard confirmed.
One of the affected rides featured a giant frog topping, now cordoned off behind tall black fencing as investigations continue.
Investigation Underway as Show Reopens
Lambeth Country Show reopened on June 8, but the funfair rides remain shut. Police and the Health and Safety Executive are probing the exact cause of the malfunction. Signs posted at the site read: “Apologies for any inconvenience, this ride will not open today.”
A police spokesperson said: “Emergency services responded at around 6.20pm on Saturday to a fairground ride failure. Four people were taken to hospital. A woman in her 40s remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries, while a man in his 40s is receiving ongoing treatment for potentially life-changing injuries. The man in his 50s and the 11-year-old girl have both been discharged.”
Local Leaders Demand Urgent Action
Lambeth Council confirmed a full investigation is underway, led by the Met Police and Health and Safety Executive. A council spokesperson added: “Very sadly, a funfair ride malfunctioned yesterday evening injuring four people. Our thoughts are with them. We thank the emergency services for their swift response and support for affected families. The funfair rides will remain closed as the investigation continues.”
Helen Hayes, Labour parliamentary candidate for Dulwich and West Norwood, took to X (formerly Twitter) saying: “I’m shocked to learn of the failure of a fairground ride at Lambeth Country Show earlier this evening. My thoughts are with those injured and all who witnessed this horrific event. There must now be an urgent investigation.”
The Lambeth Country Show is a beloved free community event held since 1974, attracting over 120,000 visitors each June weekend.
