Massive Cargo Ship Packed with Explosive Fertiliser Anchors Off Kent Coast
A cargo ship carrying a staggering 20,000 tons of ammonium nitrate fertiliser—TEN times the amount linked to the deadly 2020 Beirut blast—is stuck off the Kent coast, sparking fears of a potential disaster.
The vessel, named MV Ruby, sails under the Maltese flag and set off from Russia just last month. It has been refused entry at several ports due to damage and the volatile nature of its cargo.
Ship Damaged in Storm, Rejected by Ports
The MV Ruby reportedly suffered hull, rudder, and propeller damage during wild weather near Norway. Attempts to dock in Norway and detour to the Baltic Sea were refused. As a result, the ship anchored near Margate and Ramsgate, waiting for safe passage to Malta. But Malta insists the dangerous fertiliser must be offloaded before entry is allowed.
Huge Risk to Kent’s Coast and Marine Life
Ammonium nitrate is highly explosive when mixed with other substances. The MV Ruby’s cargo poses a severe danger, especially as it sits only miles from the SS Richard Montgomery—a WWII munitions wreck holding 1,400 tons of unexploded bombs.
Chief Superintendent Darren O’Callaghan warned: “Vessels like this must be carefully handled to protect local communities and busy shipping lanes in the English Channel.”
To put it in perspective, the Beirut explosion involved just 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate but killed over 200 people and devastated the city. This ship carries nearly nine times that amount. Experts fear an explosion here could be catastrophic.
Suspicious Sailing Raises Security Concerns
Defence experts are on high alert. The ship’s Russian cargo origin and erratic sailing route have raised suspicions it could be testing Europe’s coastal response capabilities amid current geopolitical tensions.
With the ship in international waters, the UK’s hands are tied under maritime law. But any transit through the congested English Channel—a key global shipping route—keeps officials glued to the situation.
Authorities Scramble to Find Safe Harbour
So far, no port will risk accepting the MV Ruby to offload its explosive cargo and carry out repairs. Meanwhile, the ship drifts in dangerous waters, putting Kent residents on edge.
Authorities urge calm and confirm strict safety protocols are in place. International efforts are underway to coordinate a solution and avoid disaster.
This unfolding crisis is a stark reminder of the peril lurking in international shipping lanes, especially during tense political times. Officials vow to find a safe way out before the MV Ruby becomes a ticking time bomb off Britain’s doorstep.
