Single Malt Welsh Whisky Gets Official Protection Boost

Food and Farming Secretary Therese Coffey has announced that Single Malt Welsh Whisky will now hold the same protected status as legendary Welsh products like Gower Salt Marsh Lamb and Welsh Leeks. The announcement came today at the Royal Welsh Show, marking a major win for Wales’ whisky makers.

First Spirit to Be Registered Under New UK Scheme

This is the very first UK spirit to be registered and protected under a new post-Brexit scheme that safeguards regional food and drink products. The move puts Single Malt Welsh Whisky in the same elite club as Scotch Whisky, Melton Mowbray Pork Pies, and Cornish Clotted Cream.

Consumers can now buy with confidence, knowing their bottle is 100% genuine and protected from cheap knock-offs.

Welsh Whisky’s Unique Heritage and Quality

Dating back to 1887, Single Malt Welsh Whisky must be made entirely in Wales using malted barley and pure Welsh water. Only whiskies produced following these strict rules can carry the name. Four Welsh distilleries currently hold the registered status, exporting to over 45 countries worldwide, including the US, France, Germany, and China.

Every step from brewing to bottling happens in Wales. The country’s damp climate helps produce an even maturation for a smooth, refreshing taste. Many distilleries still draw on their own wells, using Wales’ famously fresh water to keep standards high.

Industry Cheers Protection Move

“Single Malt Welsh Whisky is widely acclaimed for its lightness of character and I am pleased to announce it will be the first protected spirit under our UKGI scheme at the Royal Welsh Show,” said Therese Coffey.

“This shows how the UK government backs the very best British food and drink to boost sales and jobs at home and abroad.”

Stephen Davies, CEO of Penderyn Whisky, added:

“Getting UKGI status is a huge milestone for us and the whole Welsh whisky industry. It safeguards quality and origin, putting the spotlight on a steadily growing sector.”

Welsh Secretary David TC Davies said:

“Wales is building a strong reputation for top-quality food and drink. This recognition helps distillers market Welsh whisky globally while telling consumers they’re getting a genuine, 100% Welsh product. It’s great news for jobs and prosperity.”

Single Malt Welsh Whisky’s new Geographical Indication (GI) status guarantees full protection across Great Britain. This means whisky lovers can trust they’re getting the real deal, made with pride by Welsh producers.
