West Midlands Waste Firm Hands Over £100k After Devastating Fire

Axil Integrated Services Ltd, a West Midlands waste operator, has forked out £100,000 to the Purple Horizons Nature Recovery Project. This hefty donation comes as part of an Enforcement Undertaking with the Environment Agency, following a blaze at their Cannock site back in September 2022.

Fire Sparks Environmental Action

The fire sparked concerns as contaminated water from the firefighting efforts needed careful containment and removal to stop environmental damage. In a rare move, the Environment Agency decided not to pursue prosecution, instead opting for a positive fix-up through funding.

“Enforcement Undertakings allow polluters to positively address and restore the harm caused to the environment and prevent repeat incidents,” said Graham Aberley, lead investigator for the Environment Agency. “This approach helps avoid lengthy court cases while ensuring companies clean up their act.”

£100k Boost for Nature Recovery in the Black Country

The donation will bankroll the Wildlife Trust for Birmingham’s Purple Horizons project, aiming to create a massive 12,000-hectare nature corridor. This vital green link connects Cannock Chase Special Area of Conservation with Sutton Park National Nature Reserve, benefiting reptiles, birds, and vital pollinators.

“This funding will truly make a difference to our wildlife charity partners and local councils,” said Chloe Hardman, project manager at Natural England. “It’s a big step towards a healthier environment for nature and people.”

Looking Ahead: A Greener Future for the Region

Purple Horizons is one of 12 major nature recovery projects across England. Details on how the new cash will be spent are due soon, with hopes high to boost biodiversity and protect wildlife habitats for generations to come.
