Bully Dog owners are urged starting today to register their XL bully dogs for exemption as the breed faces a ban effective February 1 next year. Owners must apply to the Index of Exempted Dogs by the end of January to avoid legal repercussions.
If granted exemption, owners must adhere to stringent measures, including muzzling, leash use in public, microchipping, and neutering. Dogs older than a year by January 31 must be neutered by the end of June, while those under 12 months old must undergo neutering by December 31, 2024.
Owners without a certificate of exemption risk criminal charges and unlimited fines if found with the breed after February 1. Their dogs could also be seized.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak declared XL bullies a “danger to communities” in September following a fatal “suspected” attack in Staffordshire and other attacks. Concerns about the breed’s impact on public safety prompted the decision.
