Man Fighting for his Life after Newport Assault

Officers from Hampshire Constabulary have cordoned off an area of St James’ Street in Newport after a man was found injured just before 4am this morning. It appears he was assaulted. He is currently in a life threatening condition and being treated at Southampton General Hospital.

Police are asking people to avoid the area today as we continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident. Road closures are in place on St James’ Street between McDonalds restaurant and the junction with Trafalgar Road. There are also closures at the junctions of St James’ Street with Chapel Street and Orchard Street. Anyone who may have witnessed the assault, or has any information should contact police on 101 quoting incident #157.
