Hydrochloric Acid Spillage Sparks Emergency in Camberwell Estate
Hazardous Chemical Leak Sparks Full Emergency Response
Emergency crews rushed to the Peabody Estate in Camberwell tonight after a large spillage of hydrochloric acid was reported. Firefighters, police, and ambulance teams arrived just before 8pm following alerts of a chemical leak inside a flat on the Camberwell Green Estate.
Residents Evacuated As Firefighters Gear Up
A number of residents were evacuated as firefighters donned chemical suits and breathing apparatus to tackle the hazardous spill. Two fire engines, two command units, and a specialist DIM (Detection, Identification, and Monitoring) decontamination unit were seen parked at the scene.
Serious Health Risks From Hydrochloric Acid
Hydrochloric acid can cause severe chemical burns on skin and tissues, and if it contacts the eyes, it risks causing blindness. The danger depends on the acid’s concentration and the length of exposure. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the spillage and why the acid was stored in the flat.
Emergency Services Keep Tight Lid on Incident
London Ambulance Service has deployed multiple resources to manage the situation. Police and London Fire Brigade have been contacted for comment but have yet to release details.
