Emergency crews rushed to the Peabody Estate in Camberwell tonight after a large spillage of hydrochloric acid was reported. Firefighters, police, and ambulance teams arrived just before 8pm following alerts of a chemical leak inside a flat on the Camberwell Green Estate.

A number of residents were evacuated as firefighters donned chemical suits and breathing apparatus to tackle the hazardous spill. Two fire engines, two command units, and a specialist DIM (Detection, Identification, and Monitoring) decontamination unit were seen parked at the scene.
