A train collided with a broken-down car on the Grove Ferry level crossing, near Hersden, this afternoon, triggering delays and a large emergency response. Thankfully, no injuries were reported in the incident, which occurred shortly before 2 PM on September 27, 2024.
The vehicle, a Nissan Qashqai, had come to a stop on the tracks before it was struck by a Southeastern train. Images from the scene show emergency crews working to assess the damage, with the car visibly damaged on the tracks next to the train carriage.
The crash caused significant disruption to train services between Canterbury West and Ramsgate, as Southeastern reported that services were delayed, cancelled, or diverted via Dover Priory. Grove Ferry Hill was also temporarily closed as responders dealt with the situation.
Southeastern shared updates on social media shortly after 2 PM, confirming the disruption to services. At 4 PM, Network Rail Kent and Sussex acknowledged the collision, stating: “We’re aware of a slow-speed collision between a train and a car at Grove Ferry level crossing. Thankfully there are no reported injuries, and our front-line responders are working with Kent Police and British Transport Police to remove the car from the crossing.
By 4:45 PM, officials confirmed that the car had been safely removed from the tracks. The line was reopened at 5:20 PM, though services continued to run at reduced speeds through the area, causing ongoing delays.
A spokesperson for Network Rail explained: “Earlier this afternoon, a train collided at slow speed with a car at Grove Ferry level crossing. The power to the electrified third rail was switched off while our teams worked with police to safely remove the car and assess the damage. The line has now reopened, but we expect some delays as services return to normal.”
Network Rail added that they will continue repairs on the crossing over the weekend to ensure the road is fully operational again soon. They expressed their gratitude to passengers affected by the disruption and thanked them for their patience.
Train services are expected to gradually resume normal operation, though passengers are advised to check for updates as delays may still occur.
