Pensioner Attacked with Knife After Refusing to Wash Tracksuit
A pensioner in Swanley faced a brutal knife attack after turning down a man’s request to wash his tracksuit. Michael Leahy, 61, has been sentenced to six years and three months behind bars for the terrifying assault that left the elderly victim shaken and bruised.
Knife Attack Over Laundry Dispute
The violent incident unfolded on February 23, 2024. An intoxicated Leahy showed up at the woman’s home near London Road, brandishing a broken serrated knife. The victim had previously helped him by washing his clothes, but this time she refused.
Enraged, Leahy grabbed her by the throat and lunged with the blade, striking towards her face, stomach, and arms. The struggle lasted several minutes until another elderly neighbour stepped in to push Leahy out. The victim escaped serious injury but suffered cuts, bruises, and abrasions.
Leahy Arrested and Found Guilty
Police arrested Leahy at the scene, recovering the discarded knife. At Maidstone Crown Court, he admitted assault causing actual bodily harm but denied the more serious charge of attempted wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. A jury convicted him after hearing the case.
Sentenced to Over Six Years Behind Bars
On December 10, 2024, Leahy was handed a hefty prison sentence of six years and three months. He must serve at least two-thirds before parole. The court also slapped a ten-year restraining order on him to protect the victim from any future contact.
Police Condemn “Savage” Attack
“Leahy left his victim in genuine fear for her life, repaying her earlier kindness with a savage and terrifying attack,” Detective Constable Chris Welham said.
“He claims no memory of the assault, blaming heavy vodka consumption. I hope the victim finds comfort knowing he’s behind bars and will remain subject to a ten-year restraining order.”
