Teacher Stabbed 54 Times in Brutal Carshalton Murder
Frenzied Attack at Home
A man stands accused of murdering his long-term partner in a savage stabbing that left her dead in their south London home. James Madden, 39, allegedly stabbed Gemma Devonish 54 times during a “prolonged and frenzied” attack at her Carshalton residence, the Old Bailey heard today.
Gemma, 36, was a beloved primary school teacher known for her dedication and warmth. Neighbours raised the alarm after hearing terrifying shouting and distressing sounds on the night of September 14, 2024. Emergency services rushed to the scene but pronounced her dead shortly after arrival.
Chilling Court Details
Prosecutor Eleanor Grant told the court, “This was a calculated and ferocious attack on a woman who had devoted her life to educating and caring for children. The nature and extent of the injuries demonstrate the intent to kill.”
Police arrested Madden just hours later at a nearby address. The court heard he had sent threatening messages to Gemma in the days before her death.
Trial and Tributes
In a brief hearing, Madden confirmed his identity but refused to enter a plea. He was remanded in custody with trial set for March 2025.
Outside court, Gemma’s family and colleagues paid emotional tribute. “Gemma was a bright light in the lives of everyone she touched. She was passionate about her work, loved by her students, and cherished by her family. We are devastated by this senseless loss,” they said.
Ongoing Investigation
The forthcoming trial will explore the couple’s relationship, including any history of domestic abuse. The Metropolitan Police have urged anyone with information to come forward as inquiries continue.
