Tragic news from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue: Dexter, their famous fire investigation Cocker Spaniel, has died. The loyal canine was a true hero, sniffing out fire causes and saving lives across four counties for nearly a decade.

Hero Dog Who Sniffed Out Danger Across Four Counties

Dexter was no ordinary pooch. Starting training at just 16 weeks old, he officially began his career in 2015. Over seven years, he worked alongside his handler, Dave Coss, covering Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, and Lincolnshire.

Known as the busiest dog in the business, Dexter attended up to 200 fire scenes a year. His expert nose helped pinpoint fire causes, protecting homes and communities throughout the East Midlands.

Dedicated Duo: Dave and Dexter’s Long-Standing Partnership

Dave Coss joined Derbyshire Fire and Rescue in 1992 and became a dog handler in 2000. Dexter was his third fire investigation dog. Together, they served the region for seven years, with Dexter retiring officially in 2023.

Even after a brief break, the pair returned to duty, proving their commitment to the fire service and the vital work they loved.

Emotional Tribute from Handler Dave Coss

“I’ve been really touched by all the support and kind messages. It shows just how much people care – not just in Nottinghamshire but across the entire fire service family. I didn’t realise how many lives Dexter had touched,” said Dave.

More than a working dog, Dexter was a beloved character who brought joy to everyone around him. Dave will continue his work with fire investigations alongside his other dogs, Ginny, Tim, and Barney.

Our thoughts are with Dave and all who knew Dexter. His paw prints will remain forever on the hearts of the fire service and the communities he fiercely protected.
