Police Pay Crisis: Officers Struggle to Feed Families

Essex Police Chief BJ Harrington has issued a stark warning: officers can’t keep working without a fair pay rise. “You can’t Taser the petrol bill or handcuff the family’s Lidl shop,” Harrington said, highlighting how rising living costs are pushing police to breaking point.

Pay Slashed by 17% Since 2000

New data from the Police Federation reveals police pay has plummeted 17% in real terms since 2000. With wages lagging far behind inflation, many officers are forced to take on second jobs to make ends meet. Over 300 officers have already sought permission to work extra shifts or side gigs.

“My colleagues are proud — they are not the type to complain, but someone has to speak up for them and their families,” Harrington said.

Officers Leaving the Force Over Money

The crisis is prompting talent to flee the force. One newly promoted sergeant quit weeks after passing tough national exams. Another officer left to work closer to home at a family restaurant. A father-to-be police officer resigned to become a scaffolder, earning £250 a day — far more than his police salary.

Foodbanks Inside Police Stations

Harrington revealed officers are now relying on foodbanks set up inside police stations. “It breaks my heart that those who risk their lives to catch criminals have to depend on their mates for a hot meal after their shift,” he said. The police benevolent fund has handed out nearly £250,000 in aid over the past two years.

If pay trends continue, officers face a further 4% pay cut by 2027 — against a backdrop of soaring mortgage payments and household bills.

One thing’s clear: police officers deserve a pay rise — before more leave the frontline or struggle to feed their families.
