Mass Unlicensed Rave Sparks Chaos in Steyning
Police have swooped on a massive illegal music event in Steyning that saw up to 2,000 partygoers gather near Bostal Road in the early hours of Sunday (27 June). The huge crowd, packed with vehicles and pedestrians, forced a major police operation to shut down the rave safely.
Violence and Crashes Amid Party Havoc
Officers faced fierce hostility as they tried to engage with revellers. One officer was assaulted while arresting a suspect. A police community support officer is now being treated for a suspected broken arm following a collision involving a police car and a vehicle leaving the event. The driver and passengers of that vehicle were also taken to hospital.
A 20-year-old man from Redditch was arrested for driving under the influence of drink and drugs linked to the crash. At 5.45pm police ordered the crowd to disperse, and by 7.15pm the event was over. However, major road disruption remains, and motorists are warned to avoid the area if possible.
More Than 50 Arrested, Equipment Seized
- Police confiscated a large haul of sound systems and speakers.
- Eight organisers were identified and arrested.
- A second crash involving a police vehicle led to another arrest for dangerous driving and failing to stop.
- Over 50 people have been arrested for offences including drug and drink-driving, possession of drugs, and theft.
- Sussed Police say this is one of their biggest unplanned operations in years.
Police Warn: No Tolerance for Rave Chaos
Detective Superintendent Juliet Parker said: “The mindless actions of mostly out-of-county visitors have severely disrupted Steyning. I thank the public for their patience as we worked to bring this event to a close. “The safety of the public, officers and emergency services was our top priority. This required a huge police response, including officers pulled from serious crime duties and vulnerable support. “These individuals showed total disregard for the community, local heritage, and Covid-19 rules. We will not tolerate this behaviour in Sussex, as shown by the many arrests made. “We will continue to investigate and prosecute where possible.” Officers will remain in the area, stopping vehicles as they leave for the foreseeable future.
