City of London Police Launch Major Counter Terrorism Conference

Security pros, business bosses, and counter-terrorism experts gathered at the City of London Police’s first ever counter terrorism conference, CT2022, on Thursday 10 March. The event, hosted at the iconic 22 Bishopsgate, attracted over 150 attendees aiming to make the Square Mile the safest city area on the planet.

Top Experts Sound the Alarm

Speakers from the National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO) and Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI) delivered eye-opening briefings on the world’s most pressing security threats. They laid bare the dangers impacting cities globally and discussed the latest strategies to keep London safe.

Special guest Figen Murray, OBE, gave a heartfelt keynote speech calling for the urgent introduction of the Protect Duty law (formerly Martyn’s Law). Murray has campaigned fiercely for tougher security since her son Martyn Hett died in the 2017 Manchester Arena terror attack that claimed 22 lives. She stressed the need for stronger protections in public spaces.

City Police Lead the Fight Against Terrorism

“Keeping people safe and feeling safe is a priority for the City of London Police. The City of London has huge historical, cultural, and economic importance and we are committed to making it a safe space for people to enjoy,” said Paul Betts, Assistant Commissioner for Operations and Security at City of London Police.

“We must all stay resilient against terrorism. Combating this threat requires teamwork with our community, partners, and other law enforcement agencies. CT2022 shows the strength of that partnership.

“Alongside our counter terrorism strategy and Project Servator policing tactics, we’re making it tougher for terrorists and criminals to operate in the City.”

St Paul’s Cathedral Backs Security Efforts

Jonathan Brady, Head of Security at St Paul’s Cathedral, said: “We continue to work closely with Project Servator and the City of London Police.”

“Our staff collaborate with visitors, volunteers, and neighbours to implement security and counter terrorism measures. Events like CT2022 help us share vital info and best practices to keep everyone safe.”

New Tools and Training to Boost Security

Counter-Terrorism Security Advisors (CTSAs) also highlighted the See, Check and Notify (SCaN) training, which equips staff at venues and events to spot suspicious behaviour and respond correctly.

A new device, the ‘Notify Pad,’ was unveiled. This paper notepad prompts security personnel to record crucial details when reporting suspicious activity. It will be trialled across City security teams over the next three months.

CTSAs also discussed their efforts to work with businesses and residents, raising awareness about radicalisation risks and online safety. They continue to provide expert advice on physical security measures to keep Londoners safe.
