Five-Storey Building Collapses in Cairo, Killing Nine
A five-storey apartment block tumbled down in Cairo’s Hadaeq el-Qubbah district on Monday, killing at least nine people. Rescue crews are digging through the wreckage, desperate to find survivors.
Tragedy Strikes Close to City Centre
The state-run MENA news agency confirmed the bodies were pulled from beneath the rubble just 2 miles from central Cairo. Four more victims were rushed to hospital, while nearby residents were evacuated amid fears of further collapse.
Police have sealed off the area, allowing rescue teams to work methodically through the debris.
Government Offers Compensation and Aid
Egypt’s Ministry of Social Solidarity announced families of the dead will receive 60,000 Egyptian pounds (£1,600) each. The ministry is also providing support to the injured and assessing nearby buildings for damage.
Ongoing Crisis of Unsafe Buildings
The cause of the collapse remains unclear, but tragedies like this are all too common in Egypt. Poor construction standards and neglect plague many urban slums and rural zones.
Just last Sunday, four died in another northern Egypt building collapse, with 13 injured. In June, a 13-storey tower in Alexandria crumbled, killing 10 people. Back in 2021, a Cairo building collapse claimed at least 18 lives.
Authorities have recently cracked down on illegal building work, aiming to curb dangers from unauthorised floors and substandard construction. Still, developers chase profits by dodging permits and adding risky expansions, putting countless lives in peril.
