Blind Teen Jack’s Dream Comes True with Magical Santa Bus Launch

Jack’s Journey: From Diagnosis to Determined Fundraiser

Fourteen-year-old Jack from Gateshead was diagnosed with a brain tumour on his optic nerve when he was just four months old. The condition left him registered blind, but that hasn’t stopped him. After countless rounds of chemotherapy and hospital stays, Jack calls himself the happiest boy in the world. He’s proud to spread his unstoppable optimism and raise money for charity.

A Special Christmas Wish Granted

When Jack’s nana, Elaine from Washington, reached out with his Christmas wish to tour the Gateshead Riverside depot, Go North East went one step further. They invited Jack to launch their magical Santa Bus tour, kicking off the week-long festive journey across the region from Monday 19 December.

“This has been the best present Jack could have ever hoped for,” says nana Elaine. “We’ll be out on Monday night to wave at Santa and his elves!”

Helping Others While Living His Dream

Since age seven, Jack has been raising funds for charities such as CLIC Sargent and Heel & Toe. Now, he’s focused on Dreamflight, a UK charity that gives seriously ill or disabled children a life-changing trip to Orlando.

Jack took part in the Dreamflight trip this October and wants to help other kids experience the same joy. Dreamflight believes fun and happiness are as vital as medical care for children battling tough illnesses.

Santa Bus Spreads Festive Cheer and Supports Jack’s Cause

Dan Graham, Go North East’s Commercial Development Manager, said the Santa Bus is run by volunteer staff to bring joy to families across the region. The tradition started during Covid as a safe way to see Santa and proved hugely popular in its open-top tour last year.

“We’re excited to hit the road again and see all those smiling faces. This year, we’re proud to help Jack with his fundraising. The Santa Bus tour is free to watch, but we encourage the public to donate to Jack’s GoFundMe supporting Dreamflight,” Graham added.

  • Tour starts: Monday 19 December
  • Location: Gateshead Riverside depot, then local villages, towns, and cities
  • Support Jack: Donate to his GoFundMe fundraiser for Dreamflight
