Copnor Man Jesse Madgwick Jailed for Drug Crimes and Police Assaults
Jesse Madgwick, from Lyndhurst Road, Copnor, was handed a tough sentence at Portsmouth Crown Court on Thursday 19 November. The 28-year-old pleaded guilty to multiple offences, including drug-related crimes and violent attacks on police officers.
Drug Busts and Cash Finds
Madgwick’s run-ins with the law began on 27 July 2018 in Southsea, when officers stopped and searched him during an unrelated probe. The search uncovered drug paraphernalia and a large stash of cash.
Just two months later, in the early hours of 30 September 2018, Madgwick was caught again on Market Way, Portsmouth, carrying a significant amount of Class A drugs, a heap of cash, and several phones – classic signs of drug dealing.
Attacking the Boys in Blue
The violence escalated on 24 November 2019 at a domestic incident in Copnor. Madgwick attacked two officers. One was hit with a metal bar and even bitten on the hand, suffering minor injuries, while the other officer was left with swollen, red marks on her face.
Then, on 8 February 2020, things went from bad to worse. While police were arresting someone else at another domestic scene, Madgwick pushed an officer to the ground. While in custody the same evening, he kicked another officer in the stomach. Thankfully, neither officer was seriously hurt.
Guilty Pleas and Tough Words From Police
- Three counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker
- One count of obstruction/resisting a constable
- Two counts of involvement in the supply of a Class A drug
- One count of making an offer to supply a Class A drug
- One count of supplying a Class B drug
- Two counts of possessing criminal property
Detective Constable Graham Skull said, “We take a zero tolerance approach to assaults on our officers, and do not accept that it is simply part of the job. No emergency worker should expect to come to harm while doing their job. As a force, we will continue to work with the CPS to bring those responsible for these awful attacks to justice.”
