Horrific Tube Attempted Murder at Notting Hill Carnival
Arthur Hawrylewicz, of Avondale Gardens, Cardiff, has pleaded guilty to attempted murder at Inner London Crown Court. His sentencing is set for 24 April.
Shocking Attack on Crowded Tube Platform
On 29 August, a 22-year-old woman was waiting on the busy Hammersmith and City Line platform at around 1.30pm with friends, en route to Notting Hill Carnival. Hawrylewicz was nearby, seemingly drunk and attempting to talk to her. When she asked him to leave her alone, things took a terrifying turn.
As the train approached, Hawrylewicz grabbed the victim from behind, lifted her off the ground, and tried to throw both himself and her in front of the oncoming train.
Friends’ Bravery Saves Woman’s Life
In a desperate struggle, two of the victim’s friends pulled her to safety just in time. Hawrylewicz then placed his head in front of the train and was knocked unconscious by a glancing blow.
Quick Police Response and Suspect’s Strange Claims
Police arrived swiftly, arresting Hawrylewicz who was treated for minor injuries in hospital before being interviewed. He claimed to have drunk heavily and travelled to King’s Cross intending self-harm, denying any memory of assaulting the victim.
Detective Sergeant Mike Blakeburn said: “This was a completely unprovoked and incredibly disturbing attack which will have been beyond terrifying for the victim – a young woman enjoying a day at Notting Hill Carnival. Without her friends’ brave actions, this could have been a murder investigation.
“Hawrylewicz offers no explanation and claims no recollection, but the victim will carry this trauma for life. He faces a hefty custodial sentence to reflect the seriousness of his violent actions.”
“While shocking, incidents like this are extremely rare on the rail network. The British Transport Police were on scene within minutes and quickly arrested Hawrylewicz, keeping him in custody throughout the investigation.”
