Hero Cop Takes Down Armed Drunk on Streets of Dorchester
Chase Ends in Dangerous Confrontation
On March 6, 2019, Dorset Police got reports of a drunk man roaming Dorchester with another suspect. PCs Natalie Skinner and Anthony Elswood rushed to the scene, just after PC Mark Powell had arrived. The two men spotted police and bolted.
PC Skinner jumped out of her police car and chased the man she recognised—already known for assault and drug supply. Despite orders to stop, he fled on foot, stumbling. As Skinner closed in, she spotted him pulling out an object with a large black handle—she feared it was a combat knife.
Stun Gun Threat Sparks Taser Showdown
Drawing her Taser, Skinner warned the man she was Taser-trained and ordered him to halt. She grabbed his arm. Then, shockingly, he brandished a stun gun just inches from her head, swinging it threateningly.
Skinner fired her Taser, but it missed. Regaining distance, she fired again—this time, it hit true. The man dropped unconscious, ending the terrifying standoff.
Arrest and Praise for Bravery
Skinner arrested the man for possession of a prohibited weapon and intent to supply drugs after tablets were found. Officers also caught the second man, who was charged with assault and drug possession.
The suspect has since been found guilty and awaits sentencing.
“Natalie apprehended this dangerous man, even though she knew he had some kind of weapon,” said Dorset Police Federation Chair James Dimmack. “It took incredible bravery to pursue him and then grab him while he was armed. She fully deserves this award nomination, and I thank her for removing this man from our streets and ensuring public safety.”
National Police Bravery Awards Nominee
PC Skinner’s courage has earned her a nomination for the National Police Bravery Awards, recognising outstanding officers across England and Wales. She will attend the awards ceremony and reception in London this July.
