Birmingham Man Busted in Plot to Smuggle Glock Parts into UK

Haroon Iqbal, 32, from Bramble Dell, Birmingham, tried to sneak Glock 17 internal parts into the UK by hiding them inside electronics and using a false identity. His plan was foiled when UK authorities intercepted the shipment on 22 January 2022.

Ensnared by NCA Sting Operation

Although the parts themselves weren’t illegal, officers from the National Crime Agency (NCA) forensically marked them to track their movement. When Iqbal picked up the package from a Birmingham address on 24 January, NCA agents were waiting. He was arrested the following month, and the parts were seized.

Undercover Chat Reveals Detailed Smuggling Plot

Shortly after the first shipment, the US-based seller was arrested by US Homeland Security. Authorities seized his phone and uncovered encrypted Signal messages showing Iqbal’s elaborate efforts to avoid detection.

  • Asked if the seller had ever had shipments seized.
  • Requested a Christmas card be added as a decoy to make the package look legitimate.
  • Insisted the package “doesn’t look suspicious” with “no glaringly obvious gun parts visible as soon as you open.”

Unaware the seller was now an informant, Iqbal continued to communicate with US investigators, requesting more parts, including a Glock 17 barrel and rifle components. He even micromanaged packaging details, fretting over shipping costs and expressing frustration over the UK phone number used for delivery.

Final Arrest and Sentencing

US authorities arranged for a decoy toolbox to be shipped to a different Birmingham address. On 28 February, NCA surveillance officers swooped. Iqbal was arrested, his phone — the same one used on the parcel — found in his car. Officers also seized a 3D printer, ammunition press, and the first shipment marked with forensic ID at his business.

Iqbal pleaded guilty to attempting to possess a firearm at Birmingham Crown Court on 27 April 2022. He was sentenced at the same court recently, putting an end to his gun smuggling scheme.
