Sunderland Stabbing Horror: Man Nearly Killed in Neck Attack

Knife Attack on Hutton Street

Ibrahim Abdilahi, 28, faces years behind bars after stabbing a man in broad daylight on Sunderland’s Hutton Street. The attack erupted on the evening of November 1 last year following an argument. Abdilahi pulled a knife and plunged it into the victim’s neck, severing his carotid artery—just inches from killing him.

Emergency Surgery and Court Drama

The victim was rushed to hospital and placed in a coma after emergency surgery. Abdilahi fled the scene but was spotted by witnesses entering a nearby home. Police found him blood-covered with a hand injury he bizarrely blamed on opening a tin of tuna.

Yesterday at Newcastle Crown Court, Abdilahi was cleared of attempted murder but convicted of wounding with intent and possessing a blade.

Police Warn: ‘No Excuse for Carrying a Knife’

“It is sheer luck the victim survived,” said Detective Constable Shaun Stokoe. “The knife severed a neck artery – a millimeter either side and Abdilahi would be facing murder or manslaughter charges.”

“There is absolutely no excuse for carrying a knife. Abdilahi is a danger to society and now faces a significant custodial term.”

“We will not tolerate knife crime on our streets. Anyone caught with a weapon will be dealt with swiftly and robustly.”

Witnesses Play Key Role in Arrest

Neighbours watched in horror as the brutal attack unfolded. Witnesses pointed police to the door Abdilahi entered, helping officers find him quickly. Police praised the community for reporting the incident.

“Those who contacted police did the right thing,” said Det Con Stokoe. “Your calls helped us locate Abdilahi and get the victim to hospital in time.”

“If you suspect someone is carrying a knife, call us. Your actions could save a life.”
