Drunk Train Passenger Goes Berserk on North Wales Rail Service
Nicholas Evans, 33, from Penmaenmawr, has been found guilty of multiple offences after a violent outburst on an Avanti West Coast train. The shocking event unfolded on May 11, starting at Llandudno Junction and ending with his arrest at Bangor railway station.
Rampage on the Rails
Evans boarded the 7pm service at Llandudno Junction, travelling less than 20 minutes to Bangor. As the train neared Penmaenmawr, it came to a sudden halt with alarms blaring. Evans, reportedly drunk, had pulled the emergency handle, forcing the stop.
The train manager confronted him in the vestibule as Evans shouted, “I want to get off” and pounded on the doors. Despite repeated attempts to reset the emergency handle, Evans kept pulling it down, delaying the journey.
When the manager asked Evans to wait until the next stop, he struck the manager in the face. Passengers intervened and Evans eventually returned to his seat — but the chaos was far from over.
Violent Arrest and Mayhem at Hospital
At Bangor station, British Transport Police (BTP) officers arrested Evans for assaulting the train manager. But Evans fought back, kicking one officer three times and resisting custody. He then kicked a second officer and spat at them during the struggle.
Evans suffered an unrelated injury and was taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd hospital. While waiting in the police van outside, he urinated in the cell and violently forced his way out. Officers had to use Captor spray to control him after he kicked another officer in the chest.
He was removed and re-arrested for further offences, bringing his total charges to assault, three counts of assault on emergency workers, and criminal damage.
Police Condemn “Disgraceful” Behaviour
BTP Sergeant Rob Thomas said: “This was a disgraceful display of behaviour by Evans, initially towards the train manager and then towards officers. Violent behaviour towards officers and rail staff will not be tolerated under any circumstances. There was absolutely no excuse for the behaviour displayed by Evans during this protracted incident.”
“I am grateful to the courts for the sentence imposed on the defendant and hope it serves as a strong reminder that this type of behaviour will absolutely not be tolerated,” added Sgt Thomas.
He also thanked North Wales Police, ambulance crews, and hospital staff for their support during the ordeal.
