Drink and Drug Driver Kills Two Young Siblings in Tragic M4 Crash Drink and Drug Driver Kills Two Kids in Devastating M4 Crash

Van Driver Martin Newman Under the Influence

Martin Newman, 41, has been nailed for a shocking crash that killed two young siblings. The van driver was over the drink-driving limit and had cocaine in his system when his Ford Transit smashed into a family’s Ford Fiesta on the M4.

Newman, from Croeserw, Neath Port Talbot, had been drinking red wine while behind the wheel and had recently taken cocaine and drunk vodka and cider till 5am on the crash day.

Tragic Crash Kills 3 and 4-Year-Old Children

The family were returning from a birthday bash, heading to Techniquest in Cardiff, when disaster struck. They’d pulled over on the hard shoulder in Newport after their four-year-old daughter Gracie Ann complained of a bad stomach and needing the loo.

Newman’s van careered into their stationary Fiesta at 57mph. Three-year-old Jayden Lee Lucas and sister Gracie Ann later died in hospital. Their mother, Rhiannon Lucas, survived but with serious injuries.

‘Most Flagrant Disregard’ for Road Safety

CCTV footage from Traffic Wales showed Newman swerving wildly across lanes from the Prince of Wales Bridge before crashing. Witnesses saw him driving dangerously fast and holding a phone to his ear despite warnings to stop.

Prosecutor Roger Griffiths said: “The force of the impact had forced the rear seats into the back of the front seats inside the car.”

Judge Daniel Williams called it “the most serious level of dangerous driving” and “the most flagrant disregard of the rules of the road.”

Family Demand Tougher Sentencing

Newman has pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving. At sentencing, the bereaved family slammed the punishment as too lenient and vowed to fight for harsher penalties that truly reflect their devastating loss.

Judge Williams admitted some may find the sentence “inadequate” but said only Parliament could change the law.

Newman’s Shocking Admission

Newman told police he’d had just two hours’ sleep the night before after a cocktail of cocaine and alcohol. He claimed he was ‘too hungover and tired’ to work and made the three-hour drive himself, saying he didn’t remember getting onto the hard shoulder and believed he must have fallen asleep.

At the crash scene, Newman was found crying with blood on his hands, telling officers he “wished he was dead.”
