Mother Jailed for Leaving Toddler to Die Alone for Six Days

Verphy Kudi, 19, has been handed a nine-year prison sentence at Lewes Crown Court. She admitted to the manslaughter of her 20-month-old daughter, Asiah, who tragically died after being left alone and neglected for almost a week.

Heartbreaking Case of Neglect in Brighton

Asiah was rushed to the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton on December 11, 2019. Sadly, she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. A postmortem confirmed her death was caused by severe neglect. The little girl had been left at their flat on Islingword Road, Brighton.

CCTV Reveals Shocking Truth

Initially, Verphy claimed she never left Asiah’s side except for a single trip to London. However, police investigations told a different story. CCTV footage, phone data, and testimonies proved Verphy abandoned her child on December 5—her 18th birthday—and didn’t return until December 11.

Instead of caring for Asiah, Verphy spent days partying in London and Coventry, only returning after six days of neglect. These movements were captured on camera, showing a reckless disregard for her child’s safety.

Police and Family React to Tragedy

“This was a particularly distressing case for my team,” said Detective Chief Inspector Andy Wolstenholme. “Verphy Kudi accepted the terrible choice she made in leaving her child alone and unprotected. She also admitted to lying to avoid being caught.”

“I hope her acceptance helps her family as they grieve Asiah’s loss. Sussex Police will always fight to protect children and vulnerable people.”

Verphy and Asiah’s family released their own statement, saying:

“We are devastated and have many unanswered questions. Verphy has faced so much at a young age, and we have always done our best to support her. We are in the middle of an unbearable tragedy and ask for privacy during this difficult time.”

Ongoing Review Into Child Safeguarding

The Brighton and Hove Safeguarding Children Partnership is conducting a Child Safeguarding Practice Review into Asiah’s tragic death. The findings are expected to be published later this year, with Sussex Police fully cooperating with the investigation.

Anyone worried about a child’s welfare is urged to report concerns immediately, as early intervention can save lives.
