Met Police Officer Sacked After Punching Woman in Tooting
PC Shanoor Ali Faces Misconduct Hearing
PC Shanoor Ali, from the Met’s South West Basic Command Unit, stood trial from February 22 to 24 over claims he used excessive force. The officer was accused of punching a member of the public during a June 27, 2021, incident in Tooting.
Alleged Assault During Arrest
PC Ali attended an address alongside other uniformed officers when the incident happened. A female bystander was reportedly punched by Ali before she was arrested. However, the case against the woman was later dropped.
Misconduct Panel Finds Officer Guilty
Following a thorough hearing, the misconduct panel ruled the allegations proven, branding it a level 1 misconduct offence. Detective Chief Superintendent Clair Kelland expressed shock at the incident.
“This matter will clearly be of great concern to our community, and rightly so. I can only imagine the trauma, and physical impact on the woman concerned, at the hands of a police officer. I am shocked by what happened. Police officers do need to use force in some instances, but it is clear that PC Ali went way beyond what was proportionate in this incident.
It is right that he has been held to account for his actions and will now no longer be a police officer.”
Ex-Officer Barred From Policing Jobs
PC Ali has been dismissed and added to the Barred List by the College of Policing. This blacklist stops him from working for any police force, local policing bodies, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, or His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary.
