Brutal Attack in Newcastle: Stevens Jailed for 29 Years
Matthew Stevens, 28, was found guilty of attempted murder after a violent assault that left his victim fighting for her life. The Newcastle Crown Court jury reached the verdict following a six-day trial in December.
Horrific Assault After Night Out
On the night of March 10, 2022, Stevens met the woman during a night out. He later coaxed her into a taxi but ignored her pleas to be taken home. Instead, he drove her to Brunswick Village in Newcastle.
CCTV captured the pair walking along Drysdale Crescent towards nearby fields around 3am. Moments later, Stevens launched a savage attack, leaving the woman battered and barely conscious.
Grim Discovery and Critical Care
A dog walker found the victim naked, unconscious, and covered in swelling with her clothes scattered across the grass. She was rushed to hospital, where doctors gave her critical care. The trauma was so severe, she later had no memory of the attack.
Key Evidence Leads to Arrest and Conviction
- Police traced telecoms data from Stevens’ phone.
- Witnesses came forward with statements supporting the case.
- CCTV footage placed Stevens at the scene.
When arrested at his home on Drysdale Crescent, officers found blood-stained clothes and recovered the victim’s bracelets.
Stevens was charged and convicted of attempted murder. Today, he was sentenced to 29 years in prison with an extra three years on extended licence.
Police Praise Sentence and Urge Community Vigilance
“Stevens is a danger to one and to wider society, and I am pleased with the sentence handed down,” said Detective Inspector Tam Fowler of Northumbria Police’s Major Investigation Team.
“He lured a lone woman into a taxi, took her somewhere she clearly didn’t want to go, then beat her within an inch of her life – before going home to sleep like nothing happened. There’s no place in our communities for someone who thinks this abhorrent behaviour is acceptable.”
“I hope this sentence offers some closure to the victim, who has shown incredible strength during these proceedings, even facing her attacker in court. She can now begin to move forward knowing justice has been done.”
“This despicable behaviour can never be excused. Violence is completely unacceptable. Thanks to all officers, staff and witnesses who helped ensure a dangerous man can no longer harm others.”
