Crackdown on Drunk and Drug Drivers Nets Hundreds in December
Police officers from the Roads Policing Unit smashed down on drink and drug driving during December 2022 as part of the national Op Limit campaign. The festive crackdown targeted motorists suspected of being impaired behind the wheel.
Numbers Reveal Grim Reality
The results are stark. A total of 136 were charged with drunk driving, 91 for drug driving, and 22 for refusing to provide a specimen. These arrests highlight the ongoing danger on the roads during busy periods.
Chief Inspector Sounds the Alarm
“Driving after just one drink can double the chances of having a collision, and getting behind the wheel at twice the legal limit makes drivers 30 times more likely to cause a collision,” warned Chief Inspector Craig West, Head of Roads Policing.
He stressed that the Christmas and New Year period sees a spike in these offences, making continuous campaigns vital all year round, not just in winter.
Zero Tolerance: Don’t Risk It
West urged every driver: “No matter the day, don’t get behind the wheel if you’ve had any alcohol or are impaired by prescription or illegal drugs.”
“We are committed to changing bad driving habits to keep everyone on our roads safe,” he added.
