Channel 4 Unveils New Doc on Infamous Sycamore Gap Tree Vandalism

Channel 4 is diving deep into the shocking axe attack on the iconic Sycamore Gap tree in Northumberland. The broadcaster has commissioned Slaying at Sycamore Gap, a gripping two-part documentary from Candour Productions, that peels back the layers of this stunning 2023 crime.

200-Year-Old Landmark Gone in a Flash

The beloved Sycamore Gap tree, a star of the classic film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, stood proudly beside Hadrian’s Wall — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its brutal felling on 28 September sparked outrage across the globe and triggered an urgent police probe by Northumbria Police.

Now, with exclusive access to the force, award-winning director Anna Hall promises a revealing look behind the scenes. The documentary features fresh interviews with witnesses, suspects, officers, and experts, exploring the tree’s symbolic value to locals and the worldwide shockwave its destruction caused. It will also dig into the possible motives behind this bizarre act.

Criminal Case Hits the Courtroom

Leading this tough investigation are SIO Rebecca Fenney and DS Calum Meikle. With no CCTV footage and almost no witnesses, the probe faced serious obstacles. Yet two men, Daniel Graham (38) and Adam Carruthers (31), have been charged with causing over £620,000 worth of damage to the tree and Hadrian’s Wall.

Both deny the charges. Their trial is slated for December 2024, and the case promises to be a courtroom thriller.

Channel 4’s Big Vision

Senior Commissioning Editor Anna Miralis said: “This documentary is guaranteed to be both enlightening and utterly compelling. It is my hope it will offer up some understanding of what drove those to commit such a senseless crime.”

Director Anna Hall added: “This is an incredible opportunity to tell the story of some very unusual police work and why we all cared so much about a Slaying at Sycamore Gap.”
