Tragic Death of Toddler Asiah Kudi: New Review Unveiled
The Brighton & Hove Safeguarding Children’s Partnership has released a stark review into the heartbreaking death of 20-month-old Asiah Kudi in December 2019.
Left Alone for Nearly Six Days
Asiah was found dead in a Brighton flat after her mother, Verphy Kudi, went out to celebrate her 18th birthday. Court heard that Verphy, later jailed for nine years for manslaughter, abandoned Asiah for almost six days, travelling to London and Coventry while acting like a “carefree teenager.”
Prosecutor Sally Howes QC revealed chilling CCTV footage showed Verphy left Asiah alone for 5 days, 21 hours, and 58 minutes.
Starvation and Neglect Blamed for Death
The post-mortem confirmed Asiah’s death resulted from starvation and influenza, alongside severe dehydration and extreme nappy rash.
Council Reacts to “Extremely Complex and Tragic” Case
Deb Austin, Executive Director of Families, Children & Learning at Brighton & Hove City Council, expressed deep sadness over the case. She said:
“Today is a very difficult and sad day for many as we remember a young life lost in awful circumstances. No professional could have predicted that Asiah’s mother would leave her ill child alone for nearly six days.”
“The review also acknowledges the significant support provided to Asiah and her mother, highlighting examples of good practice among practitioners.”
“Since Asiah’s death, we have strengthened multi-agency assessments and updated guidance around children with social workers. We’re improving housing and supported accommodation services for vulnerable children and families.”
“Our social workers do incredible work to keep children safe. The death of any child is a tragedy we all strive to prevent.”
“Our thoughts remain with Asiah and all affected by this heartbreaking loss.”
Inquest Scheduled for Next Year
An inquest into Asiah’s death is set for next year. Brighton & Hove Safeguarding Partnership pledges full cooperation but will withhold further comment until the inquest concludes.
