Mechanic Jailed for Stabbing Partner in Neck with Scissors
Luke Berry Slapped with 10 Years for Brutal Scissor Attack
Luke Berry, 38, a mechanic from Blackboys, was sentenced to a decade behind bars at Hove Crown Court on August 1. He pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent after stabbing his partner in the neck with scissors in a savage attack.
Berry must serve two-thirds of his sentence before parole and will remain on licence for another four years under strict supervision. A restraining order bans him from contacting the victim indefinitely.
Violent Assault After Partner Ends Relationship
The court heard Berry’s six-month relationship collapsed when his 27-year-old partner decided to leave him. Refusing to accept the breakup, Berry unleashed a violent onslaught.
- He repeatedly punched her in the head in their kitchen.
- When she tried to flee, he dragged her back into the living room.
- Berry then stabbed her in the neck with scissors.
- She also suffered wounds behind her ear and on her hand.
Despite the horrific injuries, the victim escaped and got help, needing four stitches for her neck wound.
Judge Slams “Murderous Rage” and History of Abuse
Sentencing Berry, Judge Paul Tain called the attack “unequivocally sustained” and said:
“I am in no doubt that you were overcome by a murderous rage, and using scissors in the manner you did could have caused death.”
The judge also condemned Berry’s past record of controlling and coercive behaviour in previous relationships.
Detective Praises Victim’s Courage and Urges Others to Speak Out
Detective Constable Tania Snashall, who led the investigation, said the victim was fortunate to survive:
“It was only down to sheer good fortune that the victim survived this attack, in a situation that could have been fatal.
“This horrific ordeal was made worse because it was inflicted by someone she trusted. She will take time to recover physically and mentally, but this sentence hopefully marks the start of her healing.”
DC Snashall urged those suffering domestic abuse to seek help:
“Domestic abuse should never be tolerated. This abuser will now face significant time behind bars.
“You don’t have to suffer in silence. There is help available. Contact the police on 101 or online for confidential support.
If you’re in immediate danger, always call 999.”
