St George’s Day Fete Evacuated After Man Gets Electric Shock on Bungee Ride

A St George’s Day celebration in East Sussex ended in chaos after a man suffered an electric shock on a bungee ride set up beneath a high-voltage pylon.

Electric Shock Sparks Panic at Markstakes Common

The shocking incident happened this morning at Markstakes Common near Chailey, where the Chailey Bonfire Society was holding its annual fete to raise funds for its Christmas fireworks and party.

Emergency services were called at around 11am. A man in his 20s was rushed to hospital as a precaution, while two others received minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

Eyewitness Describes “Massive Bang” and Smoke

Organiser Yasmin Tomlinson took to Facebook to apologise, saying:

“I’m really sorry to let everyone know but due to a serious incident we are having to evacuate our fete and postpone our event. We are so sorry and so sad.”

Eyewitness Linda Truluck reported hearing a “massive bang” followed by smoke billowing from the ride. She added metal poles on the bungee equipment had allegedly touched the power lines. “Thankfully no one was hurt,” she said.

Emergency Services Respond, Police Investigate

A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesperson confirmed:

“Three people were assessed at the scene and one was taken to hospital for further treatment. It did not appear they were in a serious condition.”

Sussex Police also attended the scene, stating:

“Police assisted emergency services with a medical incident at an event in Markstakes Corner, Chailey. It is understood that a man in his 20s sustained an electric shock and was taken to hospital as a precaution.”

The event was immediately abandoned. A full investigation into the circumstances is underway. The Chailey Bonfire Society has yet to announce a new date for the rescheduled fete.
