Five Men Jailed After Smash-and-Grab ATM Raid at Essex Co-op

Van Rams Co-op, Thieves Rip Out ATM

Police were called to a dramatic raid at a Co-op in Panners Parade, Great Notley, in the early hours of 7 January. A Ford Transit van was caught on CCTV reversing violently into the shop’s shutters, wrecking the front entrance.

Five men jumped out, hooked up the ATM to the Transit, then ripped it from the wall. They drove off in two stolen cars—an Audi and a Volkswagen Golf—that had been taken through violent attacks in the days before the heist.

By 6.20am, the smashed remains of the ATM were found abandoned in Colne Engaine.

Warrants Executed, Suspects Named

Detectives moved fast and identified Shane Parker, Wayne Parker, Jamie Parker, Danny Johnson, and James Hamilton as the masterminds behind the raid.

On 22 February, all but Hamilton were arrested during a series of raids. Hamilton was later caught following a chase in a stolen Ford Mondeo. The men faced multiple charges, including conspiring to commit burglary.

Faced with overwhelming evidence, all five pleaded guilty at Chelmsford link="linked">Crown Court on 18 October.

Jailed for a Total of 50 Years

  • Shane Parker, 25, from Comberton, got 14 years, including arson charges.
  • Wayne Parker, 27, sentenced to almost 14 years from Long Green, Cressing.
  • Jamie Parker, 37, of Wicken, received 7½ years with arson counts.
  • Danny Johnson, 22, from Bedford, slapped with 6 years plus arson.
  • Jamie Hamilton, 23, from Chelmsford, got 9 years for arson, theft and dangerous driving.

Detective Inspector Frazer Low, leading the investigation, said:

“These men thought they could get away with these brazen attacks, but they were dead wrong. Thanks to our quick detective work and policing tactics, we identified and arrested them swiftly.
