On-Off Lover Jailed for 23 Years Over Brutal Murder of Helen Anderson
Dane Messam has been sentenced to a minimum of 23 years in prison for the shocking murder of his on-off partner, Helen Anderson. The 52-year-old from Finsbury Park was found guilty after a gripping five-week trial at Guildford Crown Court.
Helen’s Body Dumped in Guildford Woodland
Helen, 41, was discovered dead wrapped in a duvet and plastic sheet in a small wooded area near the A3 in Guildford on August 23, 2021. A passing member of the public raised the alarm shortly after 3pm that day, triggering a Major Crime investigation.
Messam, who had been in a turbulent five-year relationship with Helen and lived with her in North London, became the prime suspect within hours. Police uncovered chilling details suggesting he tried to cover his tracks and flee the country.
Dirty Tricks & Failed Escape
- Messam cancelled Helen’s flight to Jamaica on the very day her body was found.
- His red and white double-decker bus – a quirky mode of transport the couple used – broke down the day after her death. Photos showed it had been hastily cleaned, with brushes and buckets on board.
- On August 25, police caught Messam driving the bus away from London. He appeared to be heading to store the vehicle before his planned flight to Jamaica.
- But before escaping, he diverted to Guildford and drove past the spot where Helen’s body was found.
- Police arrested him at a petrol station outside Bicester, Oxfordshire, putting an end to his horrific flight.
Detective Chief Inspector’s Statement
“This was a tragic case where a woman lost her life at the hands of a man she loved who abused her trust,” said Detective Chief Inspector Emma Vickers of Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team. “Even with all the evidence, Messam denied involvement, causing extra pain for Helen’s family by dragging them through a tough trial. He acted entirely out of self-interest, leaving her body in Surrey — a place she had no connection to — hoping to cover up his crime long enough to escape.” “I’m proud of the officers who worked tirelessly to put Messam behind bars. This large-scale investigation involved Surrey and Sussex Police and the Metropolitan Police, securing crucial evidence from Messam’s home in Finsbury Park.” “We send our thoughts to Helen’s family, who showed immense bravery throughout the investigation and trial. I hope today’s sentence brings them some comfort.”
