Exclusive: The Man Who Took on the Post Office Scandal

A new film, People vs Post Office: The Real Story, goes deep into the biggest miscarriage of justice in British legal history. It has exclusive access to Alan Bates, the tireless campaigner who has spent nearly 20 years exposing the scandal. His deal was brokered by Luke Speed of the Curtis Brown Group.

Sub Postmasters Speak Out

The film also features the sub postmasters whose lives were shattered by faulty accusations. These brave individuals were portrayed in the recent ITV drama, but the documentary reveals their real stories.

  • Over 700 sub postmasters were wrongfully convicted over 14 years
  • Many faced prison sentences on false theft charges
  • Lives ruined, reputations destroyed, and financial ruin was common
  • Severe mental and physical health problems, and at least one tragic suicide

Alan Bates: The David vs Goliath Battle

After the Post Office claimed Alan was responsible for missing money and terminated his contract in 2003, he refused to accept blame. Alan suspected the Horizon computer system—supplied by Fujitsu—was the real culprit. He rallied hundreds of other innocent sub postmasters and took on the powerful, government-owned Post Office.

Against all odds, Alan won a landmark legal victory. But his fight for justice and compensation for the victims rages on.

Behind the Scenes

Executive producers Natasha Bondy and Ben Gale are bringing this haunting story to life. Natasha said:

“This story has shocked the nation. Alan Bates has fought so hard for justice without seeking fame. We’re honoured to tell his story.”

Jo Clinton-Davis, Controller of Factual at ITV, commissioned the film along with Sue Murphy, Head of Factual Entertainment.

“This film gives voice to those who sacrificed so much to expose a scandal at the heart of a trusted UK institution. It’s an eye-opening and compelling companion to the ITV drama.”
