Life Behind Bars for Deadly Drunk Drivers Under New Law
Life Sentences for Dangerous Drivers Who Kill
Judges can now hand down life sentences to dangerous drivers whose actions lead to death. This includes careless drivers who kill while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The new maximum penalty is a huge jump from the previous 14 years.
The change comes into effect this Tuesday as part of the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts (PCSC) Act.
Harsher Penalties for Serious Injury Caused by Careless Driving
The reforms introduce a brand-new offence: causing serious injury by careless driving. Those responsible for long-term or permanent injuries will face tougher punishments under the updated laws.
Justice Minister Slams Reckless Drivers
“Too many lives have been lost due to reckless driving behind the wheel, devastating families,” said Dominic Raab, Deputy Prime Minister, Lord Chancellor, and Secretary of State for Justice. “We’ve changed the law so that those who are responsible now face life in prison.”
Sign Language Interpreters Allowed in Jury Deliberations
In a separate but significant reform, the government will now permit sign language interpreters to assist deaf jurors during deliberations. Until now, only the 12 sworn jurors could enter deliberation rooms, blocking those with hearing loss from fully taking part.
“The right to be judged by your peers dates back to Magna Carta and is a cornerstone of our justice system,” Mr Raab added. “We’re changing the law so that many more deaf people can perform this important civic duty.”
