Drunken Racist on the Rails Jailed for 10 Months
A 34-year-old man has landed behind bars after a vile drunken rampage where he spat at and racially abused rail staff and police officers. Mitchell Campbell, from Millfold Rise, Rotherham, pleaded guilty to multiple charges including two counts of assaulting emergency workers, assault by beating, a racially aggravated public order offence, and threatening behaviour.
A Savage Outburst on the Rotherham-Sheffield Train
The trouble kicked off on July 19 when train staff from a service between Rotherham and Sheffield flagged Campbell’s aggressive and threatening behaviour towards passengers. Despite having no ticket, the train conductor allowed him to stay on board, fearing for everyone’s safety.
When the train arrived in Sheffield, the conductor alerted the station supervisor. They found Campbell asleep on the train, but his mood quickly turned nasty. On waking, he swore and threatened to stab the staff. As they tried to escort him off the platform, Campbell shoved the supervisor in the chest and spat in his face.
Arrest Fueled More Abuse
Campbell’s terror didn’t stop at the station. Once in custody, he spat at two police officers and hurled racial abuse at another. His disgusting behaviour sealed his fate.
Police Crack Down on Rail Violence
“Violence and abuse of any kind will not be tolerated on the rail network,” said Sergeant Roy Percival. “No one should expect to come to work and face violence or vile racial slurs. Being drunk is no excuse for this disgusting behaviour.
“Hopefully Campbell’s sentence will give him time to reflect on his actions and their consequences.”
Campbell was sentenced to 10 months in jail at Sheffield Magistrates last Monday, July 22. His shocking conduct serves as a stark warning to anyone thinking of abusing rail staff or emergency workers.
