Dangerous Driver Runs Red Light and Flees After Horrific Crash
Shocking photos reveal the wreckage after reckless driver David Gibson blew through a red light in Sutton-in-Ashfield, causing a serious collision. Two passengers in his car suffered severe injuries, including spinal fractures, but Gibson fled the scene.
Gibson Jailed Over Crash That Left Passengers Seriously Injured
Today, 28-year-old Gibson, from Milward Road, Heanor, Derbyshire, was sentenced to two years and three months behind bars. He pleaded guilty to two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop after the crash.
The smash happened at the junction of Station Road and the A38 on 16 July 2019, around 12:30am. Gibson was speeding in his Renault Clio when he ignored the red light and collided with a Land Rover Discovery.
Passengers Suffer Life-Changing Injuries
- The male passenger endured a fractured pelvis, broken ribs, shattered spine and jaw, plus damaged teeth and an injured eye.
- The female passenger faced broken vertebrae, severe bruising, cuts to her eye, and required neck surgery.
- The Land Rover driver suffered substantial bruising and muscle damage, losing around £9,000 in work as a self-employed joiner.
Police and Judge Send Clear Warning to Reckless Drivers
Gibson was also banned from driving for three years, ordered to take an extended re-test, and must pay a £181 victim surcharge.
“Whenever we get behind the wheel of a car, we have the safety of other road users in our hands – not to mention the lives of any passengers,” said Police Constable Jonathan Stubbings.
“Gibson showed complete disregard for this responsibility, driving recklessly and fleeing when his passengers were seriously hurt.”
“The victims have had major surgery and face lifelong effects. We hope this sentence helps them move forward and warns others that dangerous driving carries heavy consequences.”
