Man Jailed Over 25 Years for Christmas Day Murder of Widow
A man has been locked up for more than 25 years for murdering a widow on Christmas Day 2021. Thomas Grant, 28, of no fixed address, was found guilty of killing 39-year-old Lucy Clews at her West Chadsmoor home.
Fatal Christmas Eve Meeting Ends in Tragedy
Grant met recently widowed Lucy on Christmas Eve. She kindly offered him a place to stay over the holidays. But the goodwill ended in horror. Lucy was found dead on December 29, after her mother raised concerns when she heard nothing over Christmas.
The court heard Grant killed Lucy in her home on Christmas Day. He then robbed her jewellery, including her wedding ring and a necklace belonging to her late husband. He also sold her phone to fund his drug habit.
Damning Evidence and Guilty Verdict
- CCTV showed Grant leaving the scene on Christmas Day.
- He lied about his identity and tattoos at arrest.
- A knife with both their DNA was found at the crime scene.
- Lucy suffered multiple stab wounds and was strangled.
Despite his denials and later claims that police lied about his admissions, a jury convicted Grant after a five-week trial at Stafford Crown Court. On 30 October, he was sentenced to 25 years and 152 days in prison.
Family Mourns, Police Seek Justice
“We cannot express in words the hurt we feel in losing Lucy,” said her family. “The sorrow and pain will never go away, but it is some comfort to know justice has been served.”
Lucy’s mum, Linda, added: “I will always love Lucy, my daughter and my memories of her will live on.”
Grandmother Elizabeth said simply: “I love her and will always love her, forever and always.”
Detective Chief Inspector Cheryl Hannan, leading the investigation, said: “This was a horrific, cruel and exceptionally violent attack on a vulnerable, grieving widow. Grant showed no remorse and exploited her kindness. The sentence won’t bring Lucy back, but it represents justice.”
