Fifth Man Charged Over Hospital Power Blackout in Margate
A fifth suspect has been hit with charges after a daring attack left Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital in Margate without power. Thomas Kiely, 27, from Tower Hamlets, was arrested on Wednesday, 3 April 2019.
Serious Charges Filed
Detectives from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate charged Kiely with conspiracy to steal and criminal damage with intent to endanger life. He has been remanded and is set to face Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 5 April.
Power Lines Sabotaged in February
The incident occurred at around 7.15pm on 20 February 2019 when power lines supplying the hospital were deliberately damaged. This caused a dangerous blackout at a critical healthcare facility in Ramsgate Road, Margate.
Four Others Already in Custody
- Noel Mahoney, 23, of Bow, London
- Patrick Kiely, 35, of Bromley-by-Bow, London
- James Kiely, 37, of Shipston on Stour, Warwickshire
- Jonathon Whitty, 38, of Bow, London
All four were arrested on 21 February and charged with criminal damage with intent to endanger life and attempted theft. They remain in custody ahead of a hearing at Birmingham Crown Court, date yet to be confirmed.
