Cop to Face Murder Charges Over Chris Kaba Shooting

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has approved murder charges against a Metropolitan Police firearms officer over the fatal shooting of Chris Kaba in September 2022. The officer is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, September 21.

IOPC Referral Leads to Murder Charge

This shocking decision follows a referral from the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). Chris Kaba, 24, was shot dead on September 5, 2022, in Streatham Hill after police pursued his vehicle.

Police Speak Out Amidst Growing Tension

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Helen Millichap said: “We have fully supported the IOPC investigation as it has worked to establish the facts. Today’s announcement is a significant and serious development. We must now allow the court process to run its course so it would not be appropriate for me to say more at this stage. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this case.”

The officer charged remains suspended. Any misconduct proceedings will wait until after the criminal trial.

What Happened On That Fatal Night?

  • Chris Kaba was shot in the head by an officer firing from a marked police car on Kirkstall Gardens, a tight residential street.
  • The shooting came after an unmarked police car followed Kaba’s vehicle without lights or sirens through south London.
  • The Audi Kaba was driving was linked by police to a firearms incident from the previous day.

This case has sparked a heated debate over police use of firearms and accountability. The upcoming court appearance now marks a crucial chapter in a high-profile investigation that has gripped the capital.
