Woman Found Dead in Derry Flat Sparks Murder Probe

Detectives in Northern Ireland have launched a murder investigation after a woman’s body was found in a city centre flat in Derry/Londonderry in the early hours of Saturday, August 24.

Fatal Fire on Harvey Street

Emergency crews were called to a ground-floor flat on Harvey Street at around 4:15 a.m. following reports of a fire. Firefighters, paramedics, and police discovered the woman’s body in a bedroom. Authorities suspect the victim was aged between 40 and 60, but her identity remains unknown.

Detective Chief Inspector Anthony Kelly revealed the victim suffered a “horrific attack” with multiple injuries, describing the case as a “heinous and evil crime.”

Police Ramp Up Presence as Investigation Continues

DCI Kelly said: “This brutal murder has caused great concern, understandably, but we are working at full pace to establish what happened and catch those responsible.” An increased police presence is expected across Derry in the coming days.

A crime scene remains in place on Harvey Street while a post-mortem is conducted to confirm the cause of death.

Police Appeal for Information from Public

Officers are urgently calling on anyone who was near Harvey Street between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. on August 24 to come forward. They want to hear from witnesses who spotted anything suspicious or unfamiliar vehicles.

I’m appealing directly to the local community to tell us anything you know. We need to find out who did this,” DCI Kelly urged.

If you have any information, call police on 101 quoting reference number 225 24/08/24, submit a report online via the PSNI website, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously at 0800 555 111. Authorities insist that even the smallest details could be vital in bringing the killer to justice.
