Romford Doctor Faces Long Jail Term for Sex Assaults on Patients

A Romford GP who shamelessly used Jade Goody’s name to pressure patients has been found guilty of sexually assaulting dozens of women. Manish Shah, 50, from Brunel Close, Romford, carried out intrusive and unnecessary medical exams over five years, targeting more than 20 female patients in their 20s and 30s.

Two Trials, Multiple Victims

At the Old Bailey, Shah was convicted of nine counts of sexual assault and 16 counts of sexual assault by penetration linked to eight women after a six-week trial ending on 3 December. This follows an earlier trial in 2018, where he was found guilty of similar offences against 17 other women. Sentencing for both cases is set for 7 February 2020.

Misusing Trust and Medical Authority

Shah’s crimes took place between 2009 and 2013 while working at Mawney Medical Centre in east London. He deceived patients into having unnecessary breast and vaginal exams, often citing urgent cancer checks by name-dropping celebrities to scare them.

  • He was “overfamiliar,” making inappropriate comments.
  • Physically violated women with unwanted hugs, kisses, and contact.

How the Abuse Was Exposed

The scandal surfaced in July 2013 when four women reported Shah’s behaviour to the medical practice. Police launched a thorough investigation, interviewing 139 women and uncovering widespread abuse. NHS England reviewed his notes, raising alarms about the medical justification of his exams.

“Shah was trusted and liked by many patients, unaware he was exploiting his position for sexual gratification,” said Acting Detective Superintendent Richard McDonagh. “This conviction is the result of a complex and sensitive investigation, supported by NHS England. I commend the courage of the victims whose testimony was crucial.”
