Crimea Bridge Hit in Deadly ‘Emergency’ Incident
The crucial Crimea Bridge linking Russia to Crimea has been damaged in a shocking emergency event. Two people died and a child was injured, Russian officials confirmed. Ukrainian media also reported hearing explosions near the bridge, deepening tensions as the situation unfolds.
Bridge Shut Down Amid Mystery Attack
Russian authorities immediately halted all traffic on the 19km (12-mile) bridge following the incident. Reuters footage showed the usually busy route completely empty. The bridge is a flagship project for President Vladimir Putin, who famously drove across it in 2022 after repairs from a previous blast.
Sergei Aksyonov, the Russian-appointed governor of Crimea, said the emergency struck at pillar 145, connecting Crimea to Krasnodar region, but gave no further details.
Explosions Reported, Cause Still Unknown
Russia’s transport ministry noted damage to the road near Crimea but did not comment on damage to the pillars or the cause. Ukrainian news outlet RBC-Ukraine reported hearing blasts on the bridge.
The Wagner-linked Grey Zone Telegram channel claimed two strikes early this morning at 3:04am and 3:20am, though Reuters could not verify these reports. Ukraine has stayed silent on the incident so far.
Tragedy on the Bridge and Strategic Fallout
Russian Belgorod governor Vyacheslav Gladkov revealed a couple and their daughter were in a passenger car on the bridge when the tragedy hit. The couple died and their daughter was injured, though no further details were given.
Ukrainian Odesa military spokesperson Serhiy Bratchuk shared photos showing damage to part of the bridge. It’s unclear if this is from the incident reported.
The incident could spell trouble for the U.N.-brokered Ukrainian grain export deal via the Black Sea, which is due to expire today. Ukraine and Russia are major global grain exporters.
Military analyst George Barros warned that severe damage to the bridge could cut off Russia’s main land supply route, leaving only a coastal highway along the Sea of Azov to support its troops in Kherson and Crimea.
Putin’s Pride, Russia’s Lifeline
The Crimea Bridge is Europe’s longest and a symbol of Putin’s infrastructure ambitions. Built by a company owned by Putin ally Arkady Rotenberg, Putin has hailed the bridge as a dream realised — something even tsars and Soviet leaders failed to build.
