Security Guard Busted Using Fake SIA Licence, Slapped with Community Order and £4,000 Fine
Licence Fraud Scheme Exposed
Luke Donnelly tried to beat the system by using a cloned Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence to work illegally. He paid £300 to an unknown source for the dodgy licence, hoping to dodge the required training for security work.
But his plan was foiled by Active Security Solutions Ltd, who spotted the fake during routine checks and promptly reported him to the SIA. That sparked an official investigation into Donnelly’s cheeky scam.
Court Drama and Arrest
After the probe, Donnelly was charged and summoned to court. But he skipped his hearing at Dudley Magistrates’ Court on December 13, 2024 – resulting in a guilty verdict in his absence.
The court then issued a warrant and Donnelly was finally caught and brought before Walsall Magistrates’ Court on January 9, 2025.
Harsh Sentence and Heavy Fines
Donnelly was convicted for:
- Using a cloned security licence
- Failing to surrender to bail
He now faces tough penalties including:
- 120 hours of unpaid community service
- £3,903 in prosecution costs
- £114 victim surcharge
SIA Issues Stern Warning on Fake Licences
“When somebody works in the private security industry with a cloned licence, they put the public, their colleagues, and themselves at risk.
Mr Donnelly thought he could take a shortcut by avoiding the necessary training required to safely de-escalate conflict and handle dangerous situations.
He claimed he believed the licence he bought was genuine. However, having previously held a legitimate licence, he knew he was breaking the law.
This sentence serves as a warning to anyone who attempts to evade the legal requirements for holding a valid security licence.”
– Mark Chapman, Criminal Investigations Manager, SIA
The SIA praised Active Security Solutions Ltd for their vigilance in catching the fraud before Donnelly could start working illegally.
Crackdown on Licence Fraud Continues
The SIA is stepping up efforts to root out fake licences and enforce real training standards. Security staff must hold genuine licences to ensure public safety and workplace security.
