Predator Locked Up for 11 Years After Brutal Attack on Mum and Attempted Rape of Daughter
Steven Murphy, 45, from Cottam, Preston, has been slammed with an 11-year jail term plus an eight-year extended licence after terrifying a family in their own home. The registered sex offender was convicted at Preston Crown Court on December 1 for assaulting a mother and trying to rape her 12-year-old daughter while she slept.
How the Sickening Crime Unfolded
- Murphy first made contact with the mum via Facebook before turning up at her house in April for her daughter’s talent show party.
- He pretended to give lifts home to other guests but then sneaked back to be alone with the mum and daughter.
- Taking advantage of medication that made the mum fall asleep, Murphy sexually assaulted her.
- He then broke into the daughter’s bedroom, climbed into her bed, and launched a horrific assault, attempting to rape the girl.
- The attack only stopped when the brave 12-year-old repeatedly told him to get off and leave her alone.
Judge Brands Murphy a Dangerous Offender
The judge dealt Murphy a heavy blow with an 11-year custodial sentence. He must serve at least two-thirds of it before he can even apply for parole. After release, Murphy faces a strict eight-year extended licence to keep the public safe from further harm.
Detective Praises Victims’ Courage and Urges Others to Speak Up
“First and foremost I would like to commend the two victims for their courage in coming forward and reporting what happened to them and for their bravery throughout the judicial process,” said Det Sgt Sue Wilson of Preston CID. “I hope this sentence means they can try to move forward knowing this dangerous predator is behind bars. I also hope it encourages other victims of sexual abuse to come forward and speak to police knowing we will investigate with care and prosecute offenders where possible.”
